Johnny NicholasFor four decades, Johnny Nicholas has showcased his consummate musicianship and vocal skills and graced live music scenes across the country and abroad. The list of legendary musicians with whom he’s worked and performed alongside reads like a who’s who for blues and roots music, including artists such as Mississippi Fred McDowell, Howlin’ Wolf, BB King, Muddy Waters, Willie Nelson, Eric Clapton, and Bonnie Raitt, among many others. In fact, he gave guitarist Ronnie Earl his first gig, letting him play in his then band Guitar Johnny and the Rhythm Rockers. Nicholas also spent time as the lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist for the Grammy Award winning band Asleep At The Wheel.

“Johnny Nicholas is one of the best bluesmen ever, black or white.” ~ Stephen Bruton

Scrappy Jud Newcomb is a Mississippi boy who hit Austin in the late eighties as a young guitar virtuoso, and has since evolved into a pillar of the local scene. He became the go-to guitarist in  the music city for both studio and on-stage work. He can play anything, with anybody, at any time, and when it comes his turn you’ll want to hear every phrase, every nuance, every lick. He’ll close his eyes and slip somewhere far away, and the beauty will just pour from his fingers like praise from a mother’s lips.

Johnny Nicholas and Scrappy Jud Newcomb have been touring together for some time now and will be appearing for an encore performance following their well-received gig at The Lake Theater & Café this past January on Monday, September 25 at 7:00 pm. Advanced tickets can be found online at Laketheatercafe.com for $15.00 general admission or VIP tables seating four closest to the stage for $80.00. The Lake Theater & Café is located at 106 N State Street in Lake Oswego.

Benjamin Booker

Benjamin BookerBenjamin Booker is an American musician, singer, songwrite,r and guitarist who cites The Gun Club, Blind Willie Johnson, and T. Rex as influences. His music was described by the Chicago Tribune as “a raw brand of blues/boogie/soul,” by The Independent as “frenzied guitar-strumming and raw, soulful vocals that are hair-raising in intensity” and by SPIN as “bright, furious, explosive garage rock.”

With two recordings under his belt, Booker has been receiving huge praise from journalists and fans across the country. He has opened for performers such as Courtney Barnett and Jack White and his second album featured a duet with Mavis Staples.

Benjamin Booker will be returning to Portland for an all ages performance on Friday, September 8 at The Wonder Ballroom, 128 North Russell Street. Tickets are $18.00 – $20.00 through Ticketfly.com for this 9:00 pm show. Opening will be Brooklyn, New York-based rock band She keeps Bees.

Terry Hanck

Terry HanckBlues and soul music fans know that the soundtrack to early rock’ n’ roll ran on three-minute instrumentals with sax in the lead, and was directly related to 1950s and 1960s New Orleans R&B hits, along with that deep-fried wildness that came from Memphis. With this history lesson in mind, old school rock ‘n’ soul saxophonist and singer Terry Hanck makes perfect sense. Clearly, Hanck has worshipped at the right Southern altars — those of such iconic R&B brothers as Fats Domino, Ray Charles, B. B. King, Lee Allen and King Curtis. “I write songs that you think you’ve heard for years,” says the South Florida-based Hanck, who’s got suave movie-star looks and a good time presence that immutably anchors the old-style R&B he adores.

As Living Blues writer Lee Hildebrand testified, “Hanck is one of the most formidable saxophonists in the blues and soul business. He has a virile tone and attack and an uncanny command of upper-register notes.”

Terry Hanck is multi-Blues Music Award winner for his work on sax. With a hot blues band featuring Johnny “Cat” Soubrand on guitar, drummer Butch Cousins and bass player Tim Wagar, Hanck is touring the country and will be making a trek to Oregon for a show at Catfish Lou’s on Thursday, September 7. Tickets for this 9:00 pm event can be found at Tickettomato.com for $10.00. Catfish Lou’s is located at 2460 NW 24th.

Too Slim - Too Slim & The Taildraggers Return To Billy Blues

Too Slim - Too Slim & The TaildraggersNew York writer Dave Rubin wrote that, “[i]f Tim “Too Slim” Langford only played slide guitar, he would slither around most other blues guitarists and take a ferocious bite out of their pride. But as the sole six-string slinger, songwriter and lead vocalist of the power trio Too Slim and the Taildraggers, Langford is a force of nature leaving musical tracks others try to follow”.

Creating an eclectic style of blues and rock that has become a genre all its own, Tim “Too Slim” Langford’s ever-evolving musical direction cannot easily be classified. Too Slim and the Taildraggers effortlessly cross genres, flavoring Blues with Rock and Americana, they appeal to audiences of varying musical tastes.

Tim Langford has won multiple individual awards for Best Guitarist, Best Slide Guitarist, and Best Songwriter and the band are in the Hall of Fame in three Northwest blues societies including the Cascade Blues Association. The band’s 2013 release “Blue Heart” reached as high as #3 on the BillBoard Top Blues Album Chart and Shiver, the bands previous release was a 2012 Blues Music Award nominee for “Blues Rock Recording of the Year”.

Too Slim and the Taildraggers current rhythm section consists of Nashville bassist Eric “Stretch” Hanson and drummer Jeff “Shakey” Fowlkes (Kid Rock, Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise).

Join Too Slim & The Taildraggers as the perform an afternoon show on Sunday, September 3 starting at 3:00 pm at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld.  Advance tickets can be purchased at Tickettomato.com for $15.00. Admission at the door is $20.00.

Harpdog Brown and The Uptown Blues Band

Harpdog BrownWith a briefcase filled with awards, including three Maple Blues Awards naming him the best harmonica player in Canada, Vancouver’s Harpdog Brown has been called a blues evangelist — and that’s a very fitting moniker.  “I speak the blues like it’s the truth, and it is” he was recently quoted.  “I do feel like I’m a servant of the people.  And I do heal people if they pay attention to the good messages in the songs I choose.”  He delivers those messages in the traditional sound of early electric blues.  Think of the old Chess Records and Sun Records of the late 40’s and early 50’s.  Harpdog tells us that “blues has a healing power.  It’s a beautiful celebration of our perfectly flawed lives.  We help people forget about their issues of the moment and then they realize that we all have our issues, and that’s ok.”

Andy Grigg from Blues Revue magazine wrote that “[i]sn’t it nice to know that all the “fast food / flavor of the week” blues artists are easily dispensed with when compared with the REAL THING. I mean the bona fide, totally authentic purveyor of heart and soul, down-in-the-alley blues. And, believe you me, Harpdog Brown is a  purveyor with pedigree.”

Called the best blues band in Canada, which is no overstatement, Harpdog Brown & The Travelin’ Blues Show will be bringing their classic blues to The Birk on Saturday, September 2, with a band featuring Jordie Edmonds on guitar, bassist Pat Darcus and Seattle-based drummer Jeff “Drummerboy” Hayes. The Birk is located at 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld. Show time is 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance through Tickettomato.com for $10.00 or at the door for $15.00 day of show.

Seth Walker, Seth Walker Band

Seth Walker, Seth Walker Band“[Seth Walker] is pure talent, a masterful blues guitarist, a singer with some swing in his voice and a writer whose (songs) sound less composed than unleashed.” – Austin American-Statesman.

Over the past 10 years, Seth Walker has become one of the most revered modern roots artists in the United States — a three-dimensional talent combining a gift for melody and lyric, a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice, and a true blue knack for getting around on the guitar. His latest studio album, Gotta Get Back, is yet another masterwork that further enhances  this reputation.

Growing up on a commune in rural North Carolina as the son of classically trained musicians, Seth Walker played cello long before discovering the six-string in his 20s. When his introduction to the blues, his fate was forever sealed. Instantaneously, Seth was looking to artists like T-Bone Walker, Snooks Eaglin, and B.B. King as wellsprings of endless inspiration. The rest is history.

Perhaps Country Standard Time put it best: “If you subscribe to the Big Tent theory of Americana, then Seth Walker –with his blend of blues, gospel, pop, R&B, rock, and a dash country—just might be your poster boy.”

The Seth Walker Band will be performing at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld, Friday, September 1, taking the stage at 7:30 pm. Advance tickets can be found at Tickettomato.com for $10.00 advance, with admission at the door going for $15.00.

The Paladins

The PaladinsThe Paladins from San Diego, California are the preeminent blues/rockabilly band in America. Founded in the early 1980s by guitarist Dave Gonzalez and his high school friend and double bass player Thomas Yearsley, they have recorded five singles, nine full-length studio records, and three live albums. They helped pave the way for the rockabilly craze of the early 1980s, with their tagline at the time “Western & Bop”, as they played a combination of rockabilly and vintage country together with a blues groove. Along the way they built a solid reputation as one of America’s hardest-working and best live bands.

Thirty-seven years later and The Paladins are still at the top of their game with dynamic performances that draw huge crowds. The band will be heading to Oregon for a pair of shows not to be missed.

On Thursday, September 28, The Paladins will be heading to Portland for a show at Dante’s, 350 W Burnside. Show time is 9:00 pm, contact the venue (866) 777-8932 or check their website Danteslive.com for admission prices. Tickets to be available at Ticketweb.com.

Then on Friday, September 29, head out to Hood River as The Paladins will be playing a free customer appreciation show at Double Mountain Brewery, on 8 Fourth Street. Show information is forthcoming so contact the venue at 541-387-0042 and watch their website Doublemountainbrewery.com for updates on show time.

Also, head over to Music Millennium, 3158 E Burnside, on Thursday, September 28 for a short in-store appearance by The Paladins at 6:00 pm. While you’re there, make sure to check out the band’s discography and pick up an album or two.
