Son Little

Son LittleWhat is the new magic of music? If you trace the path of a plan back to its beginnings, what do you find? Is it a tree, growing from seed with deep roots planted in fertile soil, branches arcing out in all directions? Or a spark in the dark, an electrical charge? Is it a waterway, with swirling currents raging to create a river? Or is it a snowflake, falling from on high and dropping down to earth with a singular splash? For Son Little, the genesis of a musical idea, the magic, remains largely a mystery. But his kinetic ability to summon that energy all the same, to command it, hold onto it, and set it in motion, is the stuff of alchemy.

Son Little, the singer and songwriter born Aaron Livingston, is the easygoing musical alchemist of our time. He is a conjurer, and much like those of his heroes Stevie Wonder and Jimi Hendrix, his songs are deconstructions of the diaspora of American R & B. Deftly he weaves different eras of the sound, blues, soul, gospel, rock and roll, through his own unique vision. Never forced, always smooth, each note a tributary on the flowing river of rhythm and blues, capturing the diverse spirit of American music in a fresh and modern way.

Son Little will perform at the Doug Fir Lounge, 830 E Burnside, on Friday, November 10, at 9:00 pm. Tickets for this 21 & over show are on sale in advance at Ticketfly.com for $15.00

Opening will be Jade Bird, a rising star on the London music scene, delivering a fantastic mix of alternative folk, country and pop, with a voice that can silence the busiest bar.

The Devil Makes Three

The Devil Makes Three“The Devil Makes Three has a sound that is garagey ragtime, punkified blues, both old and new timey, without settling upon a particular era,” claims the band’s guitarist and vocalist Pete Bernhard.  Inspired as much by mountain music as by Preservation Hall jazz. The combination of Berhard alongside multi-instrumentalist Cooper McBean and bassist Lucia Turino could only have happened via the circuitous route each member took to forming the band. As kids in Vermont they were all raised by sort of “hippie” parents  who exposed them to folk, blues, and jug band music, and soon took the path to nearby Boston in search of punk rock shows. The band has made its bones with dynamic performances building exuberant rhythms from the inside out, wrapping finger-picked strings and up-surging harmonies around chugging acoustic guitar and bass, plying an ever-growing audience onto its feet to jump, shake and waltz.

The Devil Makes Three has been building raucous fan base in Portland with regular sold out appearances. They will be returning to town on Friday, November 10 for an 8:00 pm show at The Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside Street. This is an all ages show, with tickets available through Cascadetickets.com and at the door day of show both for $29.50. Opening the night will be sets by Scott H. Biram and the Ditrani Brothers.

Michele D’Amour and The Love Dealers

Michele D’Amour and The Love DealersSeattle’s Michele D’Amour and the Love Dealers will be making their debut performance at Catfish Lou’s on Saturday, November 11 to celebrate their latest release Lost Nights At The Leopard Lounge. The album is a soulful throwback to Chicago blues and the juke joints of the Mississippi Delta. D’Amour whose voice has been compared with Bonnie Raitt and Marcia Ball is a born storyteller and songwriter, with a flair for writing lyrics that deal with difficult topics with a soulful whimsy and wry humor. The band is made up with D’Amour’s husband Patrick McDaniel on bass, Ryan T Higgins on guitar and Ronnie Bishop on drums.
Catfish Lou’s is located at 2460 NW 24th Avenue. Show time is 9:00 pm. Admission is $10.00 at the door and tickets can be purchased in advance through Tickettomato.com.

Selwyn Birchwood

Selwyn Birchwood“Selwyn Birchwood is a master storyteller, both lyrically and musically. He’s an impressive, hard-crunching, modern blues guitarist. His fretwork is high-energy, raw and vivid…knife-edged leads and roadhouse-rattling grooves. He is graced with a depth and maturity that would be impressive in a grizzled veteran, let alone a fresh-faced young man.” -Living Blues
With his fiery guitar and lap steel playing, his trailblazing, instantly memorable songs and gritty, unvarnished vocals, Selwyn Birchwood is among the most extraordinary young stars in the blues. His deep familiarity with blues tradition allows him to bust the genre wide open, adding new sounds, colors and textures, all delivered with a revival tent preacher’s fervor and a natural storyteller’s charisma.
Winner of the 2013 International Blues Challenge, the recipient of the Blues Music Award and Living Blues Critics’ Award for Best Debut Album Of 2014 for Don’t Call No Ambulance, and the 2015 Blues Blast Rising Star Award, Birchwood is currently touring in support of his latest release Pick Your Poison and will be heading to Portland on Wednesday, November 15 for a 9:00 pm show at the Jack London Revue, 359 SW 4th Avenue. Tickets are $10.00 at Ticketweb.com. 21 & over only.
