Ry Cooder

Ry CooderWhether serving as a session musician, solo artist, or soundtrack composer, Ry Cooder’s chameleon-like fretted instrument virtuosity, songwriting, and choice of material encompass an incredibly eclectic range of North American musical styles, including rock & roll, blues, reggae, Tex-Mex, Hawaiian, Dixieland jazz, country, folk, R&B, gospel, and vaudeville. In addition to his American music bona fides, Cooder is an unofficial American cultural ambassador. Cooder is one of the finest guitarists of his generation, and he issued his newest recording, The Prodigal Son, in May 2018, then embarked on his first American tour in 15 years.

Ry Cooder will be playing in Portland at Revolution Hall, 1300 SE Stark Street, on Tuesday, July 7 at 8:00 pm. Unfortunately for those who have not purchased tickets the show is sold out. But tickets are available through ticket brokers. Buyer beware, though, make certain that the broker is legitimate as prices can be spendy. 21 & over only.

Dave Kahl
Dave Kahl - "Paul deLay" Lifetime Achievement Award. A Benefit for Dave Kahl

Dave Kahl – “Paul deLay” Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dave Kahl has worked his magic on the bass for many years in Portland, performing in such groups as Robbie Laws, Duffy Bishop, Paul deLay Band, Ty Curtis Band, weekly gigs with the Bayou Boyz and Soul Cookin’, and many more. He is always the first person to jump in whenever a benefit for others is needed and has often put together such himself. And speaking of magic, he has been behind the brainstorming of such projects as MyGigNet.com and the Creative Community Cooperative promoting a vision for community recognition of our local music and arts scene that he has presented before our government leaders.

Yes, Dave Kahl has been a guiding force in our music community, aiding those in need many times over. Now, Dave needs our help. On July 19 he will undergo open heart surgery. As we know, musicians often struggle to make ends meet and having major health issues compounds that struggle. To give a hand to Dave a benefit show called Musicians Coming Together has been put scheduled to be held on Sunday, July 22 at Mekong Bistro, 8200 NE Siskiyou Street Suite 107, going from noon until 7:00 pm. Admission for this all ages event is $15.00 with a line-up still in the works, but already confirmed for the day are Duffy Bishop & Chris Carlson, Lloyd Jones, Ken DeRouchie Band with Arietta Ward, Mitch Kashmar, Rae Gordon, Margo Tufo, Brian Foxworth, Ben Jones, Steve Kerin, Don Worth, Julie Amici & Dean Mueller, Ed Neumann Band, AC Porter, with more to be announced.

Please come out and show your support for Dave Kahl.

Ramblings On My Mind-March 2021

Ramblings On My Mind - July 2018Greg Johnson, Cascade Blues Association President

The Cascade Blues Association is always proud to be a part of the Waterfront Blues Festival every year, whether it is having our strong volunteer base fill roles at the various stages, manning our merchandise table, or hosting the finals of the Journey to Memphis competition. This year we will also be able to do something we did a few times back in the early 2000’s, but have not had the chance to do so for many years — to be the presenters for a couple bands from out of town, all thanks to the terrific donation from the estate of William Schauer. To acknowledge William’s exceptional generosity, we are dedicating our sponsorship of these acts to his memory. First, because William was an avid guitar collector, we selected the new super blues band The Proven Ones, as one of their featured artists is guitar master Kid Ramos. Along with Ramos, the band also includes keyboard master Anthony Geraci, bassist extraordinaire Willie J Campbell, vocalist Brian Templeton and Portland’s own, drummer Jimi Bott. The second act we chose to present is soul blues legend Johnny Rawls.

Of course, we would love to have everybody heading to the festival on July 4 to start your day out on the Front Porch Stage where will once again put on the annual Journey to Memphis finals. It all starts at 11:30 am and has a spectacular line-up of talent again this year, with four great acts: Fenix Project, Johnny Wheels & The Swamp Donkeys, Rae Gordon & Kivett Bednar, and Ben Rice.

But throughout the four days of the festival, please drop by our CBA merchandise booth and take a look at all the items we have available this year, take a moment to become a member if you’re not already, or just stop by to say hello and chat a while. We’re always happy to see our members and fellow lovers of the blues. If not at the Waterfront, we will be at the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, too, just a couple weekends later.

I highly encourage anybody who is in Portland to head over to Mekong Bistro on Sunday, July 22 to help our good friend, bluesman Dave Kahl. On the 19th he will be undergoing open heart surgery and as everybody knows Dave has spent a lifetime not only performing music, but being an advocate pushing the focus of the arts to our City Council to make it identified as an important part of our community’s identity. Dave has been pushing strongly for the music we love, so let’s return the favor and give a little bit to help him get by his upcoming medical expenses.

Despite the generous donation we received, the Cascade Blues Association is constantly on a quest to keep the business financially stable. We are constantly looking at various new approaches to help accomplish this and to cut our expenses. One of these will include letting go of our office space. The room has cost us a substantial, though reasonable rent over the past few years, and the landlord has been ideal. But to be honest, we only use the space once, rarely more, times a month. It is more a storage space than anything else and we can save money by renting storage elsewhere and doing away with unnecessary items we no longer need. Our meetings in the future will be held in free spaces offered to the public or perhaps someplace that would be willing to allow us to meet once a month for free. Meetings will still be open to the public and we will announced their locations in advance.

Thank You To Holiday Party Volunteers

Albert Castiglia

Albert CastigliaAlbert Castiglia got his big break in the blues while playing guitar for Junior Wells band for two years until the legendary harp player passed away in 1998. Since then Castiglia has forged his own path with several highly-acclaimed recordings and award nominations and wins. An innovative and original songwriter with sizzling guitar chops, Castiglia knows how to command a stage and mesmerize an audience.
Castiglia will be appearing at Catfish Lou’s, 2460 NW 24th, on Tuesday, July 31, starting at 7:00 pm. Admission is $10.00 at the door.

2023 Journey to Memphis Finalists

The Waterfront Blues Festival kicks off on Wednesday, July 4 on the Front Porch Stage at 11:30 am with the annual finals for the Cascade Blues Association’s Journey to Memphis competition. This event is to select the representatives for the organization and the region to participate in the International Blues Challenge in early 2019.

The Cascade Blues Association has sent acts to the International Blues Challenge for the past twenty years. Many of the top blues performers from our area have performed in Memphis as the acts who have represented us, including the likes of Lisa Mann, Robbie Laws, Sister Mercy, Franco Paletta & The Stingers, Bill Rhoades & The Party Kings, Rose City Kings, and Julie Amici. Several have made it to the world-wide finals in Memphis and some taking home esteemed prizes: Junkyard Jane, Ben Rice & The iLLamtics, Blind Rhino, Ty Curtis Band (2nd place), Karen Lovely (2nd place) and Rae Gordon & The Backseat Drivers (3rd place).

Our four finalists this year were selected by a trio of judges in a field of fifteen acts that went head-to-head at Mekong Bistro in mid-May. The four acts who scored the highest over the two day event moving on to the finals are Johnny Wheels & The Swamp Donkeys, Ben Rice, Fenix Project, and Rae Gordon & Kivett Bednar. They will compete in front of a new set of judges in 25-minute sets, with the winning act receiving a cash prize to help defray traveling costs to Memphis.

Schedule for the Journey To Memphis:

11:30 am – Johnny Wheels & The Swamp Donkeys

12:10 pm – Rae Gordon & Kivett Bednar

12:50 pm – Ben Rice

1:30 pm – Fenix Project
