Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers

Jimmy Thackery and the DriversThe Boston Globe describes Jimmy Thackery as “a four hour performer. That’s not how long he plays, but how long one should travel to see him. He is a phenomenal guitarist, one of the best we’ve seen.”

Well, you won’t have to travel four hours to see Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers as they will be appearing in two shows within an hour or so of Portland. This is a trip well worth taking to catch one of the finest blues bands in the world.

Whether Jimmy Thackery headlines a festival or jams for hours in one of numerous blues bars that dot the musical landscape, he’ll always unleash an intense volley of rockin’ blues guitar guaranteed to leave crowds emotionally spent. His double edged guitar dynamics allow him to fire off tracer missiles, bend a note so it will fit under a limbo bar, run off dive bomber riffs, and find space within the trembling of one stinging note.

On Thursday, August 3, Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers will be appearing at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202, in Birkenfeld. Tickets for this 7:30 pm show are available in advance at TicketTomato.com for $10.00, or $15.00 at the door day of show.

Then Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers will be playing outdoors in the Columbia River Gorge for a special benefit concert for “Friends of the Stevenson and North Bonneville Community Libraries on Saturday, August 5. Tom and Barb’s Zydeco Ranch, 1551 Wind Mountain Road, Home Valley, WA. will host this event, and show time is 3:15 pm. Tickets for this family friendly bash are $25.00 available at Eventbrite.com. Skamania Lodge, along with a variety of vendors, will provide food and drinks for sale and no outside food or drinks are allowed.

Anni Piper

Anni Piper“Piper has the kind of voice that lulls men to their doom. It’s soft and sweet when it wants to be, scared and vulnerable a moment later, then ripping through you like a razor… Piper commands songs utterly.” – Jeremy Loome, The Edmondton Sun

One listen will tell you why in her homeland Anni Piper is known as the First Lady of Blues. Not only is she a sultry vocalist, but an insightful composer, accomplished bass player, and show stopping performer. Born and raised in Australia, her passion for blues was ignited by the sound of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Picking up a bass guitar at age 14, Piper completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Music degree at 19 years of age. Finding it difficult to resume her performing career following the birth of her son, Piper recorded her debut album ‘Jailbait’ in 2004. She was immediately signed to Black Market Music, Australia’s most prestigious blues label and began touring throughout the country. She has since been honored with multiple nominations and awards from the Australian Blues Music Awards, ABC Radio “Fresh Air” contest, and songwriting contests in both Australia and the UK. Piper has since recorded with the American label Blue Leaf Records and most recently released her newest album, More Guitars Than Friends, on her own Sugar Daddy Records label. Now living in the US, she has toured 35 states, playing in major venues such as The House of Blues and BB King’s.

Anni Piper will be heading to Oregon in mid-August, with her first ever appearance at The Birk on Friday, August 11. Show time is at 6:00 pm with tickets available in advance at TicketTomato.com for $10.00. Admission at the door is $15.00. The Birk is located at 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld.

On Saturday, August 12, Anni Piper will be performing at the Bronze Blues & Brews Festival in Joseph, Oregon.

Ian Moore

Ian MooreSince his arrival as a solo artist in 1993 and his self-titled debut on Capricorn Records, Texas music star Ian Moore’s journey has been one of perpetual forward motion and constant change. That record included the hits, “Satisfied,” “Blue Sky,” and even featured the track, “Harlem,” which rap icon Ice Cube made in to a music video. Now twenty-four years later and a series of recordings under various labels, Moore has released his fourteenth album, Strange Days. Birthed from channeling the influences from his childhood, soul music and the blues, while carrying forward all the hard-earned life lessons acquired on his journey that allow him to infuse these songs with a depth that only comes from many years and miles. Moore’s ability to straddle genres like a Neil Young or a Jack White is obvious. By paying tribute to such luminaries as Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, Aaron Neville (even covering “Hercules”), and Sly Stone, IanMoore can offer music politically charged at times, as well as the heartfelt love song filled with emotion and purpose.

Ian Moore will be touring Oregon for a trio of dates with his full band in early August.

On Tuesday, August 8, the band will be performing at Springville Cellars Winery in Hood River. Located at 13 Railroad Avenue, show time is at 8:00 pm. Contact the venue for admission information at 541-308-0700.

Wednesday, August 9 will find the band in the eastern part of the state, playing at the Roy Raley Ice Rink in Pendleton for their Wednesday in the Park concert series. The location is 1205 SW Court Street, beginning at 7:00 pm. Free.

The Ian Moore Band will be coming to Portland on Thursday, August 10 for a 9:00 pm show at Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Avenue. Tickets for this 21 & over concert are $16.50 advance through Ticketfly.com, or $20.00 day of show.

The Claudettes

The ClaudettesThe Claudettes fuse Windy City piano blues with the full-throttle energy of rockabilly and punk, jazz-age echoes of burlesque and vaudeville, and the sultriness of ’60s pop-soul to write a thrilling new chapter in American roots music. Group founder Johnny Iguana mashes the piano alongside singer Berit Ulseth, bassist/singer Zach Verdoorn, and drummer Matt Torre. Johnny, who has toured and recorded with blues legends Otis Rush, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, and James Cotton is also a member of two Grammy-nominated groups: Chicago Blues–A Living History and the Muddy Waters 100 Band.

When The Claudettes perform, they roam through a wide range of dynamics, often following a stomping rocker with a ballad offering the mellowest of mellow tones. They’ve created their own fanatical fusion of blues and soul-jazz, like Ray Charles on a punk kick. Imagine an amped-up piano hybrid of Otis Spann, Ray Charles, and Mose Allison, joined by a jolly madman drummer and conducted in gonzo fashion by Raymond Scott. There’s plenty of Chicago-style piano pounding, but it’s also an adventure in melting-pot music, with punk/rockabilly energy as well as lush soulful vocals. It’s definitely a performance to be witnessed and one that you’ll soon not forget.

You have the chance to catch The Claudettes as they wind their tour through Portland on Wednesday, August 9 at Catfish Lou’s, 2460 NW 24th Avenue. Show time for this 21 & over performance is 9:00 pm, with a $8.00 admission at the door, with tickets available in advance only $5.00 through TicketTomato.com.

Texas-born Hamilton Loomis is the son of musician parents who listened to blues, rock, and soul. Music ran in his veins and with instruments readily available around the house he picked up the skills on multiple instruments while performing regularly as part of his family’s doo-wop group. While still a teenager, Loomis met the legendary Bo Diddley, and the two became close friends. He learned how to entertain and take command of a stage through Diddley and has always followed the advice given him by the elder bluesman to “innovate, don’t imitate.” Loomis is at his best while onstage. He performances are energetic and infectious. Don’t be surprised to find him walking into the crowd at any given moment bringing an interactive feel to his audiences. His latest release, Give It Back, is appropriately named because that is exactly what he gives to his audiences!

Hamilton Loomis will be appearing for one show in Oregon only on Friday, August 11 at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld. Tickets for this 7:30 pm show are available at TicketTomato.com for $15.00 advance, or at the door for $18.00 day of show.

Brody Buster - One Man Band

Brody Buster - One Man BandBrody Buster hails from Lawrence, Kansas and gained international attention this past January at the International Blues Challenge where he not only earned the second place win in the solo/duo competition as a one-man band, he also took home the award for best harmonica player. But though still a young man, he has been around the music scene for a number of years. A former harmonica child prodigy, he has been featured on countless TV shows, including the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Dateline, Crook & Chase, and the Jon Stewart Show.  Even Baywatch Nights and Full House showcased Brody’s musical talents. Brody has shared the stage with Quincy Jones, Keb Mo, Chaka Kahn, Lee Oskar, and was a regular performer at B.B. King’s Blues Club. In fact, the late B.B. King once noted that “despite his age, Brody Buster is one of the greatest harmonica players of our time.”

“The music that Brody Buster performs is authentic, engaging, lively, and real; “no artificial sweeteners added.” – Barry Kerzner, American Blues Scene

Brody Buster will be bringing his one-man band performances to Oregon for the first time this August with three dates throughout the state.

He will be appearing at The Pines 1852 Tasting Room, 202 Cascade Avenue, Suite B, in Hood River on Friday, August 11. Please contact the venue for show time and admission information at 541-993-8301.

On Saturday, August 12, he will be in Eastern Oregon as part of the sensational line-up at the Bronze, Blues & Brews Festival in Joseph.

Then on Sunday, August 13, he will once again travel across the state for an afternoon performance at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202, in Birkenfeld. Show time is 2:00 pm with an admission of $10.00 at the door.

Lake Theater & Café

Four of the areas most respected and exciting blues musicians, Julie Amici, Mitch Kashmar, Ben Rice, and Dean Mueller, will be performing together in the intimate setting of the Lake Theater & Café on Monday, August 14. For this show, the theater will be clearing space for dancing, and the music will be geared more for dancers. This is a rare opportunity to see this group perform together as they are usually out fronting their own bands. These four musicians will be mixing it up all night in what is sure to be a creative and intimate one-time performance.

Julie Amici has been a rising star in the Portland Blues scene for a couple of years, who along with partner bassist Dean Mueller, was nominated for Muddy Awards in 2015 and 2016 and recently won the Journey To Memphis Solo/Duo competition to earn the honor to represent the CBA at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis January 2018.

West Coast harmonica player Mitch Kashmar  is one of the California disciples who soaked up the sound and the soul of Chicago and Mississippi and Cali-customized it. Now living in Portland, this Blues Music Award nominated musician’s blues harp playing is second to none for creativity, drive and excitement. And he’s also just as witty and imaginative in the role of songwriter

Ben Rice is deeply rooted in traditional blues, yet at the same time fiercely original. His guitar playing earns labels like “fearless,” “inventive” and “powerful,” and he routinely brings audiences to their feet with his stunning and emotionally honest vocal delivery. Ben is as much home fronting his electric blues band as he is captivating a crowd solo with nothing but his voice and resonator guitar.

Dean Mueller is a local icon, playing bass with legendary Duffy Bishop as well as being a founding member of the Insomniacs. Dean curates the Music Monday series and performs with Julie Amici across the region.

Tickets are available online at laketheatercafe.com for $15.00. The Lake Theater & Café is located at 106 N State Street in Lake Oswego. Show time is 7:00 pm.

The Rad Trads

The Rad TradsWhen The Rad Trads formed in the Spring of 2012, they were meeting each other in New York City’s East Village for the first time, transplants from Chicago, Portland, and Washington D.C., looking to play with the best musicians they could find. Their horns, guitars, drums, and love for the classics like The Band, Allen Toussaint, and Dr. John brought them together — and of course, beer.  Making rent playing four-hour gigs in every bar and beer hall that would have them, the guys dominated New York City and Brooklyn with their punk-rock energy and showmanship, so they decided to take their show on the road. Almost five years later, the Rad Trads have played on four Continents, headlining tours and opening for acts such as Tom Jones, Charles Bradley, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, Margaret Glaspy, The Lone Bellow, Con Brio, and Dustbowl Revival. They have toured Europe six times, played in 14 countries, 32 U.S. States and are soon releasing their second full length album of original music with its own creative direction and sound. Members of The Rad Trads have performed or recorded with renowned acts such as St. Paul & the Broken Bones, Deer Tick, Lee Fields & The Expressions, Jon Batiste & Stay Human, Sarah Jarosz, Christopher Paul Stelling, David Duchovny,  Lenny Pickett, Red Baraat as well as leading their own critically acclaimed bands.

The Rad Trads will be coming to Portland on Thursday, August 17 as part of a double bill alongside Reno’s funk soul outfit The Sextones taking place at Goodfoot Lounge, 2845 SE Stark Street. Show time is 10:00 pm. Contact the venue at 503-239-9292 for admission information.

Ray Bonneville
Ray Bonneville

Falcon Ridge Folk Festival 8-2-15

Ray Bonneville is a poet of the demimonde who didn’t write his first song until his early 40s, some 20 years after he started performing. But with a style that sometimes draws comparisons to JJ Cale and Daniel Lanois, this blues-influenced, New Orleans-inspired “song and groove man,” luckily found his rightful calling. Born in Quebec, his family moved to Boston when he was 12. He served a year in Vietnam as a Marine, struggled and overcame drug addiction, earned a pilot’s license in Colorado, then moved to Alaska, then Seattle, and Paris and New Orleans. But it took a close call while piloting a seaplane across the Canadian wilderness to make him decide it was time to get busy writing songs – gritty narratives inspired by a lifetime of hard-won knowledge set against his gritty, soulful guitar and harmonica playing.

He’s since earned many accolades, including a Juno Award for his 1999 album, Gust of Wind. His post-Katrina ode, “I Am the Big Easy,” earned the International Folk Alliance’s 2009 Song of the Year Award, and in 2012, Bonneville won the solo/duet category in the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge.

An Austin resident since 2006, Bonneville still puts the rhythms and soul of New Orleans into much of his music as evident in his latest release Easy Gone. His songs carry a groove and momentum that’s uniquely his — and will always be a part of him, no matter where he roams.

Ray Bonneville will be coming to McMenamin’s White Eagle Saloon, 836 N Russell Street, on Thursday, August 17, for an 8:00 pm show. Tickets for this 21 & over performance are $15.00 and they can be purchased in advance at CascadeTickets.com.
