Jody Carroll

Jody CarrollJody Carroll (McMurrian) may have moved from Portland to the East Coast, but he continues to immerse himself into authentic American roots styles and expand his boundless creative work. His music is original and deeply situated within the past and the modern.

The L.A. Times stated, “No cliché stuff here. No predictable, typical blues schlock here – only smart, eloquent, modern music that is at the same time well soaked in old weird American traditional music. Daring, original, deep, sweet, dark, exciting are some of the adjectives that come to one’s mind when listening to him. You are greeted with a whirlwind of sounds that he creates with his guitar and voice. Deep as the wood’s and delta where he comes from, dark as the river water he grew up swimming in and uplifting as the traditional American melodies and stories he was raised with.”

His performances are a sight to behold as he effortlessly creates modern interpretations of old Blues masters, his own amazing songs and stories or improvisational musical journeys. It’s like watching a Robert Johnson or Son House of old if they had been influenced by everything that came after them. He is a Finger style/slide guitar master and amazingly soulful singer like no other. His ability to freeform in the moment to create constant new renditions of traditional songs and original material sets him far apart from others. He blends flavors of old country Blues, Folk, Hill Country music, Jazz, and Rock all together into a true American gumbo.

Jody Carroll will be returning home to the Portland area for a night at The Lake Theater & Café, 106 N State Street, Lake Oswego, on Monday, August 21 at 7:00 pm. He will be performing music from his upcoming release Back To The Country along with favorites from his earlier albums.Tickets for this show are available in advance for $15.00 at Laketheatercafe.com. VIP tables situated closest to the stage, seating four, are $80.00.

Coco Montoya

Coco Montoya“Coco Montoya is a show-stopper…Heartfelt singing and merciless guitar with a wicked icy burn…he swings like a jazz man and stings like the Iceman, Albert Collins. He is one of the truly gifted blues artists of his generation.”— Living Blues

The old Willie Dixon adage, “blues is truth,” perfectly describes the searing, contemporary blues-rock of world-renowned guitarist and vocalist Coco Montoya. Taught by the “Master of the Telecaster,” Albert Collins, but with a hard-edged sound and style all his own, Montoya mixes his forceful, melodic guitar playing and passionate vocals with memorable songs, delivering the blues’ hardest truths. He earned his status as a master guitarist and soul-powered vocalist through years of paying his dues as a sideman with Collins (first as a drummer) and then with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, before launching his solo career in 1993. Five years of constant touring with Collins and ten years with Mayall turned him into a monster player and dynamic performer. Montoya has released nine solo albums and has played at clubs, concert halls, and major festivals all over the world. Guitar Player describes Montoya playing as “stunning, powerhouse blues with a searing tone, emotional soloing, and energetic, unforced vocals.”

Always a popular performer in Portland, Coco Montoya draws big audiences to his shows. He will be returning to The Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie Avenue, on Wednesday, August 23 at 8:00 pm. Purchase tickets in advance at Ticketfly.com and also day of show for $25.00.

Doyle Bramhall II

Doyle Bramhall IIDoyle Bramhall II is one of today’s most distinctive vocalists, guitarists, composers, and producers in contemporary music. Indeed, none other than Eric Clapton, with whom Bramhall has worked with for more than a decade, lauds him as one of the most gifted guitarists he has ever encountered. As the son of the late Texas music legend Doyle Bramhall, he was raised in a home filled with the blues and rock ‘n’ roll styles indigenous to Texas as well as having close ties with the Vaughan Brothers, Stevie Ray and Jimmie. JJ Thames

JJ ThamesIt’s clear that soul-blues is her calling. At age 30, JJ Thames stage presence and vocal delivery are more reminiscent of singers from the golden era of the art form than they are of most blues belters on the scene today. Her delivery is never rushed, and her ability to express deep emotion is on par with someone twice her age as she delivers everything from down-home juke joint stylings to full-blown torch songs, all containing messages of positive affirmation. Both classically and jazz trained, JJ began performing at the tender age of 9 years old and became a blues-shouting banshee by the time she was just 18 years old. She cut her teeth after moving down to Jackson, MS, where she performed with the celebrated “Chitlin’ Circuit” superstars such as Marvin Sease.

Thames’ live shows are the stuff of legend. Part revival meeting and sexual celebration, Thames will deliver a Mississippi juke joint-tongue-in-cheek blues tune or a soul ballad. She honors the bold blues women of the past with both feet firmly planted in the now. With her heart on her sleeve, she belts, growls, shouts, croons, and moans from a place deep within her soul that harkens back to the days of Chess, Bluebird, and Stax Records. She uses music as therapy and often writes from her own life story, and chooses material with positive affirmations that leave the audience feeling healed and exhilarated.

Touring in support of her latest release, Raw Sugar, JJ Thames returns to Oregon following her strong performance at the Waterfront Blues Festival for one show only at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202, BIrkenfeld. Happening on Tuesday, August 29, this show is open to all ages and starts at 7:30 pm. Advance tickets can be purchased through TicketTomato.com for $10.00, $13.00 at the door.

General Membership Meeting Slated for Wednesday, December 5

PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT WE WILL NO LONGER BE AT THE MELODY BALLROOM FOR THE MONTHLY MEETINGS!!!  THE NEW LOCATION IS CATFISH LOU’S  2460 NW 24th Ave

Wednesday, August 2 – 7:00 pm
Members always Free  – Non-members $5.00
Opening Set – Jason “JT” Thomas
Second Electric Set – Idle Poets

It is amazing just how much music is happening this summer. With the outrageous weather we have been experiencing it seems to be everywhere. From outdoor stages, backyard house parties, favorite venues, and festivals both big and small, the blues is going on everywhere. But it doesn’t matter what time of year it is, you also know that the Cascade Blues Association is going to be bringing you great music every month at their general membership meeting. And August is no exception.

Opening the evening in August for us will be a familiar face, Jason “JT” Thomas is a professional guitarist who has worked with Franco Paletta & The Stingers and Dull Boy Jack in the past, and currently performs with Lisa Mann & Her Really Good Band, Fenix and the country/rockabilly outfit Sons of Bitches. Aside from a fiery guitarist, JT is a songwriter, a teacher and has delivered Blues in the Schools presentations for the Cascade Blues Association. For the Journey to Memphis, he will be competing as a solo performer.

“JT’ is a classic ‘Jack of all trades’ guitarist who hustles the spectrum of rock, blues and country music. ‘I grew up a rocker, did time in jazz college, but drifted over into the blues and Americana. I teach cool kids and usually play with 3 to 5 bands at a time, as much as possible. I get to carry an electric guitar to work everyday, instead of a briefcase… boo ya’!”who although he will be turning 21 this month has been making a name for himself performing music for more than half his life. And that includes traveling to Memphis to represent the Cascade Blues Association in 2016 as our first youth showcase performer at the International Blues Challenge.

(Justus Reese was previously scheduled however, due to us needing to move our event to Catfish Lou’s Jason “JT” Thomas has graciously taken the acoustic spot. When Justus turns 21 later this year we will be able to reschedule him.)

The second set will be a new act to the CBA meeting stage, Idle Poets.

Idle Poets is a different kind of band.

Founder and lead singer Craig Marquardo grew up in the 80’s, enamored with the multi-layered sounds of artists embracing music of all genres. It wasn’t until his adult years that he discovered jazz, then diving headlong into the dizzying art form. When putting together this band he made sure to find players comfortable in all of the many genres they will find themselves playing.

Idle Poets takes jazz, blues, pop, soul, rock, and world music and embraces each one individually, and still making them blend together seamlessly. Even their original songs are so diverse they have a tango included in their repertoire. Covers include an array of artists from Sting to Harry Connick Jr., Jimi Hendrix to Jamie Cullum, and Peter Gabriel to Rihanna – playing likely the songs you don’t already know.

Recent performances include the Gorge Blues & Brews Festival and shows at Billy Blues, The Dublin Pub, The 1905 and The Firkin Tavern.

The band includes  a diverse array of talented artists. Vocalist Craig Marquardo whose background includes working and touring with the likes of Sting, Peter Gabriel and Bono. Keyboardist Jeffrey Kauffman is the elder of the group who studied with folks like Jacques Loussier, Joe Henderson, Roy Harris, Billy Taylor, and likely Moses. Lance Vallis on guitar has a masters degree in music in jazz studies from Portland State and has performed on international cruises around the world. Richard Armida handles bass duties and is a true R&B stage veteran having worked with The Temptations, The O-Jays, The Spinners, The Grass Roots, and Johnny Mathis. And drummer Tom Andes rounds out the Poets trained in symphonic and jazz styles, but has played everything from blues to metal.

Idle Poets is a musical experience with few peers, something best experienced live. You have your chance to capture their feel at the August CBA meeting. Don’t miss out.

We hope to see you at The Melody Ballroom for the meeting, where you not only will be hearing some of the best blues the area has to offer, but you’ll get to meet up with good friends and have the chance to win prizes just by being in attendance. Tell all your friends and bring them along.
