Ashbolt Stewart

Ashbolt Stewart will be celebrating his 68th birthday in the usual fashion … by throwing a jam party. His birthday happens on Saturday, October 21, but the party will take place at the regular Sunday night jam on the 22nd at Montavilla Station. Everybody is invited to come down and take part in the music, dancing or just having a good time! Ashbolt has been working hard for all of us behind the drums all these years: 10 years with Norman Sylvester, 16 years leading Bolt Upright, 6-1/2 years running the Montavilla jam, plus recording a great CD Beats Workin at Kid Andersen’s Greaseland Studio (which will be available that night for only $5 a copy) . . .  and he has no intention of letting up anytime soon. Come on down and party with Ash. It just doesn’t get any better!!

Over the past year we have seen a lot of tragedies strike many people, including a number of blues musicians. Disasters such as fires and snow storms have caused several musicians to lose gigs and struck a financial blow to their pocketbooks. On Sunday, October 22, a fundraiser will be held that’ll place money into a fund to assist blues artists who are affected by such circumstances in the future. The Spare Room, 4830 NE 42nd will host this event that will feature music from Ben Rice, Rae Gordon, Kivett Bednar, LaRhonda Steele, Arietta Ward, and more who’ll be announced later. The host band behind them all will be two-time Blues Music Award winner Lisa Mann & Her Really Good Band.

Admission is $15.00 and reserved seats can be purchased in advance at Music Millennium or at the door day of event. Funds will also be earmarked for the 501(c)3 charity organization Shelter Box. This group is amongst the top 100 at Charity Navigator, providing shelter boxes including tents, blankets, solar lights, and survival equipment for disasters around the world. They are currently assisting those struggling in both Texas and Florida following the recent hurricanes.

Please make a point in attending this event for a fun-filled afternoon, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, with music, an auction, raffles, food, drinks, friends, and the knowledge that you’re helping those in need.

This touring concert brings an all-star lineup of Grammy-winning musicians in a once-in-a-lifetime grouping that includes William Bell, Bobby Rush, Charlie Musselwhite, Don Bryant, Al Kapone Music, Frayser Boy, the Hi Rhythm Section, and the Stax Alumni Band all under the direction of Boo Mitchell and Martin Shore.

A Night with Janis Joplin

A Night with Janis JoplinLike a comet that burns far too brightly to last, Janis Joplin flashed into the music scene in 1967 and, almost overnight, became the queen of rock & roll. Now, Portland is invited to share an evening with the woman and her musical influences in the hit musical “A Night with Janis Joplin.”

Fueled by such unforgettable songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Piece of My Heart,”  “Mercedes Benz,” “Cry Baby” and “Summertime,” this sensational show is a musical journey celebrating Joplin and her biggest musical influences—icons like Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Odetta, Nina Simone, and Bessie Smith, who inspired one of rock & roll’s greatest legends.

Hailing from Santa Cruz, California, Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra deliver an enthralling and passionate performance, which often leaves them out of breath and the stage littered with broken strings and bow hairs.

This 21 & over show starts at 9:00 pm with tickets available at Ticketfly.com, mostly standing and limited balcony seating for $12.00 advance and at the door day of show for $14.00. Mississippi Studios is located at 3939 N. Mississippi Ave.

Songhoy Blues

Songhoy Blues“Songhoy Blues’ desert R&B is incredibly rousing and intense…conjuring a freedom and thrilling abandonment in its hypnotic shuffle boogie and punky blues rocks riffs” – Mojo

Once among the most prominent of Mali’s many ethnic groups, the Songhoy now live largely on the margins of the West African nation. Nonetheless, the Songhoy people retain a fierce pride in their history, beliefs, and traditional music. Hailing from the heart of Gao, on the banks of the Niger River, Oumar Touré and Aliou Touré grew up obsessed with hip hop, R&B, and classic rock like The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. They found a kindred spirit and musical brother in guitarist Garba Touré (son of Oumar Touré, long term percussionist in Ali Farka Touré’s band). When growing unrest in the north of Mali forced the young men and their families to take refuge in the southern town of Bamako, they decided to turn crisis into opportunity by forming a band. They enlisted drummer Nathanial “Nat” Dembele and baptized their band Songhoy Blues in celebration of their displaced people and culture.  The ambitious young band were soon a fixture on the Bamako live music scene with their desert blues, blending American guitar licks with Malian grooves.

Songhoy Blues plays in Eugene at WOW Hall, 291 West 8th Avenue on Tuesday, October 24 at 8:00 pm. This is an all ages event with tickets from $15.00 to $17.00 available at Ticketfly.com.

Songhoy Blues will be appearing at the Doug Fir Lounge, 830 E Burnside, on Wednesday, October 25. Show time is 9:00 pm and tickets can be purchased in advance at Ticketfly.com for $18.00. Day of show at the door price is $20.00. @1 & over only.
