A Celebration of Women In Music
From its earliest recordings of the 1920s, the history of the blues is brimming with women who’ve played a pivotal role in its development. Vocalists like Ma Rainey, Mamie Smith, and Bessie Smith ruled the concert halls and the jukes of their day. Over time, amazing artists such as Memphis Minnie, Ruth Brown, Dinah Washington, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and Big Mama Thornton paved the road leading right to today’s acclaimed musicians like Bonnie Raitt, Shemekia Copeland, Susan Tedeschi, and many more. In celebration of women in music, five of today’s top blues ladies will join together for a night to recognize those who have led the way and those who continue making their voices heard. Portland’s own Sonny Hess, Lady Kat, Lisa Mann, and Myrtle Brown, will be joined by Austin’s Lara Price and supported by and drummer Kelly Pierce for a night that will surely be long remembered after the final note is played. A not-to-be-missed gathering for sure!
At The Garages Satellite Pub, 4810 SW Western Ave, Beaverton. Friday, April 10, 8:00 pm. $10.00 at the door.
