A Celebration Of Rory Gallagher
A Celebration Of Rory Gallagher

Rory Gallagher on Dec 17th, 1979 at Wreck of the Hesperus (later became the Foghorn) at 102 and Halsey. Photo courtesy Two Louies Magazine.

Rory Gallagher’s music reached a massive audience from Norway to Spain, from Japan to the USA, covering all parts of the globe and producing some of the greatest rock/blues albums of the 60s, 70s and 80s. Sadly we lost Rory on June 14, 1995. To his devoted fans and followers this was the ultimate tragedy.

The Band of Friends is not a tribute to Rory, but more a celebration of his life and music. The band consists of musicians who played with Rory Gallagher as his rhythm section for years and is fronted by the incomparable Davy Knowles (Davy Knowles Band, Back Door Slam)! Alongside Knowles will be bassist Gerry McAvoy (Champion Jack Dupree, Nine Below Zero) and Ted McKenna (Greg Lake, Gary Moore, Michael Schenker Group) on drums. This is the ultimate Roy Gallagher celebration and a not to miss showcase of one of the greatest blues-rockers ever to strap on a guitar.

Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie Ave., Wednesday, December 12, 8:00 pm. $25.00, available in advance at Ticketfly.com. All ages.

The Devil Makes Three

“There’s a road that goes out of every town. All you’ve got to do is get on it,” Pete Bernhard of The Devil Makes Three says.

The Devil Makes ThreeThe guitarist/singer and his cohorts in the raw and raucous trio The Devil Makes Three have found their way onto that road numerous times since they first left their picaresque rural hometown of Brattleboro, Vermont. Back then, they had no idea it would lead them to such auspicious destinations as the Newport Folk and Austin City Limits Festivals, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza, and on tours with Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris and Rodney Crowell and Trampled By Turtles. Along the way, they drew numerous accolades from a growing fan base and press alike. Along with guitarist Bernhard, the outfit is rounded out by upright bassist Lucia Turino, and guitarist and tenor banjo player Cooper McBean.

The Devil Makes Three is an Americana band from Santa Cruz, California, United States, with a sound that is described as garage-y ragtime, punkified blues, old n’ new timey without settling upon a particular era, inspired as much by mountain music as by Preservation Hall jazz. “We bend genres pretty hard,” Bernhard says.

Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W Burnside. Friday, November 9 and Saturday, November 10, 9:00 pm. All ages show. Tickets are $29.00 advance through Cascadetickets.com, or $34.00 at the door.

Marty O'Reilly & The Old Soul Orchestra

Marty O'Reilly & The Old Soul OrchestraJust when you think American roots music should be relegated to the dusty confines of a purist’s museum it will surprise you with a paradigm shift. Take Marty O’Reilly & the Old Soul Orchestra— passing through tradition, the quartet stumbled upon innovation, proving that old souls can be creatively fresh. They homed in on their signature cosmic roots aesthetic, brimming with cinematic songcraft, impressionistic lyrics, clever arrangements, telepathic ensemble interplay, and soulfully world-weary vocals. Imagine the delta blues reprised by psychedelic indie rockers. The band features Marty on electrified resonator guitar and vocals, Chris Lynch on violin and keys, Ben Berry on upright bass, and Matt Goff on drums and percussion. The group specializes in roots music with evocative lyrics that are conceptually cryptic, relying on imagery and symbols to convey emotion. Artistic touchstones for the group include John Lee Hooker, Howlin’ Wolf, the darkly cathartic oeuvre of Tom Waits, and the experimental arrangements of Radiohead.

Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Avenue. Sunday, November 11, 8:00 pm. 21 & over. $12.00 advance through Ticketfly.com. $15.00 at the door.

Cee Cee James Stripped Down & Surrendered

American Blues Scene magazine states, “Often compared to Janis Joplin for her raw style, energy and vocals, Cee Cee James sings the Blues in a way that defines the genre itself. With a dynamic range that matches her energy, Cee Cee will take you from passionate & soulful, to raw & volcanic, and then back home again, all within the same song.”   A gifted songwriter with a handful of critically-acclaimed discs to her name including the dynamic Blood Red Blues and chart-topping Low Down Where The Snakes Crawl, Cee Cee and her guitar playing husband Rob “Slideboy” Andrews present fiery performances filled with grit and passion.
