Guy Davis

Guy DavisRecognized as one of the elite acoustic bluesmen of his time, Guy Davis has had his musical storytelling influenced by artists like Blind Willie McTell and Big Bill Broonzy, and his musicality from artists as diverse as Lightnin’ Hopkins and Babatunde Olatunji. However, there’s one man Davis credits most for his harmonica techniques — the legendary Sonny Terry. Davis has spent his musical life carrying his message of the blues around the world, from the Equator to the Arctic Circle, earning him the title “An Ambassador of the Blues.” His work as an actor, author, and music teacher establish him as a renaissance man of the blues.

Shawn James

Shawn JamesShawn James’ voice is a force of nature, a musical preacher to a flock that accepts everyone, a combination of the gospel choirs he sang with as a youngster and his training in classical music and opera. Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, James’ timeless sound is steeped in blues legends like Robert Johnson and Son House, forever at the crossroads of damnation and redemption, the two inextricably woven into the fabric of his songs.

The Dark & the Light, his first album for L.A.-based indie label Parts + Labor Records, marks a creative leap forward for the 32-year-old troubadour. James annually tours more than 150 dates around the world and has released some 70 songs over the past five years, both on his own and as part of his “more raucous, rock” band the Shapeshifters, a loose group of musicians formed in Fayetteville, Arkansas, which served as his temporary home before a recent move to the west coast.

Touring in support of the release of their seventh album, Gold, the band has shortened their name to simply Sister Sparrow and are led by the impossibly big-voiced Arleigh Kincheloe. With a reputation as one of the hardest working outfits anywhere, they perform upwards of 150 shows a year and drawing huge crowds and sold out dates across the country.

Tommy Castro & The Painkillers

Tommy Castro & The PainkillersOver the course of his career, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Tommy Castro – a six-time Blues Music Award-winner, including the coveted BB King Entertainer of the Year award – has played thousands of shows to hundreds of thousands of ecstatic fans. Castro, along with his band The Painkillers (bassist Randy McDonald, keyboardist Michael Emerson and drummer Bowen Brown) play music that is guaranteed to fill the floor and raise the roof. With seemingly telepathic musicianship, The Painkillers bring an unmatched passion to Castro’s blue-eyed California soul and hard-rocking, good-time songs. As No Depression puts it: “Castro plays gritty, string bending blues like a runaway soul train…a glorious blend that rocks the soul and lifts the spirits.”
