HowellDevine

HowellDevine

“There is no blues band performing today as different as HowellDevine—nor as delightful.”  ~ Lee Hildebrand, Living Blues Magazine/SF Chronicle

Triple threat talent, Joshua Howell (guitar, harmonica, vocals) and percussion savant, Pete Devine (drums, washboard), plus veteran upright bassist, Joe Kyle Jr. deftly mix Delta/Country Blues with wildly syncopated rhythms to create a rollicking present-day sound rooted in early blues. HowellDevine breaks from the norm, providing rich and complex textures integral to the music rather than simple backing for a soloist. The result is a sound which stands in stark contrast to the typical blues heard in bars these days and would more likely be shaking the floors of a Southern juke joint some 70 years ago.

Jackie Greene

Americana and roots singer-songwriter Jackie Greene is a jack-of-all-trades and an artist who can croon over soulful piano ballads as much as he can shred a bluesy guitar solo. Since the release of his critically-acclaimed debut album ‘Gone Wanderin’’, Greene has built an enduring audience through a relentless touring schedule with the likes of BB King, Mark Knopfler, Susan Tedeschi, and Taj Mahal. He played lead guitar with The Black Crowes on their 2013 world tour, recorded and toured with Trigger Hippy (his supergroup with Joan Osborne) and in the last four years performed over 300 shows of his own, all while continuing to record and release his solo work.

Marc Broussard & Samantha Fish

Marc Broussard & Samantha FishMarc Broussard is an artist with the unique gift of channeling the spirits of classic R&B, rock, and soul into contemporary terms. In 2004, he released his major-label debut, Carencro, after the Louisiana town where he was born and raised, and its thematic centerpiece was a hickory-smoked slab of Bayou soul called “Home.” That album and subsequent releases reveal Broussard as an old-school Southern soul singer blessed with a rarefied talent and innate stylistic and emotional authenticity.

After launching her recording career in 2009, Samantha Fish quickly established herself as a rising star in the contemporary blues world. Since then, the charismatic young singer-guitarist-songwriter has earned a reputation as a guitar hero and powerful live performer, while releasing a series of acclaimed albums that have shown her restless creative spirit consistently taking her in new and exciting musical directions.

Together, Broussard and Fish will be one of the most powerful concerts touring this year and we’re lucky to have them heading to Portland for one night only. Separate they’re worth this price of this ticket each, but having both is a welcome treat to music fans of blues, soul, and R&B.

Pokey LaFarge

Pokey LaFarge“Limiting myself to a genre has never really been my thing,” explains Pokey LaFarge. “I’m most purely a rambler. I’m traveling the world all the time, and my songs have been directly influenced by my travels.” Though he was raised on a healthy diet of blues, bluegrass, ragtime, Western swing, and old-time country — and though he has consistently demonstrated a decided affinity for pre-1950s menswear — the Illinois native is by no means a throwback or a museum piece. Timelessness, and refined good taste, is LaFarge’s raison d’être, and his influences are as multi-hued and wide-ranging as the rhythms that buoy his starkly poetic songs — rhythms that are steeped in the very essence of jazz.

Opening the show will be Jack Klatt is a songwriter and finger-style guitarist based in Minneapolis. His unique sound rides the fine line between blues and country music. He has proven to be a tried and true purveyor of American music traditions.

Gary Clark Jr

Gary Clark JrSince 2010, Grammy Award-winning guitarist Gary Clark Jr. has wowed audiences around the world with his electrifying and incendiary performances. The eclectic Texas music circuit inspired much of Clark’s sound along with performing in the church choir with his sisters, and that balance of the gritty and the Godly imbues the honey-thick soul that oozes from his vocals today. As a teen, Clark began making a name for himself by jamming with adult musicians around nearby clubs, sharing the stage with local blues heroes like Jimmie Vaughn, Hubert Sumlin, and Pinetop Perkins. This on-the-job training, combined with studying the genius of BB King, Curtis Mayfield, Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, and Parliament-Funkadelic, along with digesting the fresh edge of Tupac and Biggie, lifted Clark into a multi-instrumentalist and undisputed music festival champ.
