Lake Theater Hosts Sugar & Spice – A Holiday Treat with LaRhonda Steele & Julie Amici

Every year around Christmas, Music Mondays presents a Holiday Showcase. This year they are bringing back some of their favorites for “Sugar & Spice, A Holiday Treat.” This show will feature LaRhonda Steele and Julie Amici backed by an All-Star band consisting of Dean Mueller, Dave Fleschner, and Carlton Jackson. They will be showcasing various styles of jazz, blues, R&B, soul, and a touch of Christmas. This cast of some of Portland’s finest make this a very special Music Monday indeed. Happy Holidays!

Karen Lovely will revive her Prohibition Blues show, with an opening set from Dante Zapata. Also joining Karen for the show will be Ben Rice. The whole event will be geared toward the Prohibition era, with 1920’s era cocktails and music featured. If you’re in the Eugene area, Bill Rhoades has put together one of his outstanding harmonica showcase events with the New Years Eve Blues Harp Showdown. Party with The California Honeydrops

The California Honeydrops have a reputation as being among the most exciting and dynamic live bands on the planet. With unrelenting energy and a near-encyclopedic knowledge of musical styles, genres and idioms, the Honeydrops have spent a decade playing everywhere from subway stations in their native Oakland, California to sold-out shows in theatres and at festivals all across the globe.

The band has come a long way since vocalist, guitarist, and trumpeter Lech Wierzynkski and drummer Ben Malament started busking in an Oakland subway station. With the additions of Johnny Bones on tenor sax and clarinet, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards and Beau Bradbury on bass, they’ve built a powerful full-band sound drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B to funk, Southern soul, Delta blues and New Orleans second-line. A new addition to the band, Portland’s own Leon Cotter, who brings a soulful clarinet/flute/horn addition which adds another layer of beauty. All while staying true to the organic, street-level feel of their origins. More like parties than traditional concerts, their shows feature extensive off-stage jamming and crowd interaction.

Curing the Christmas Blues Toys for Tots holiday program

Tommy Emmanuel – Guitar Players’ Guitarist

Tommy Emmanuel, widely acknowledged as the international master of the solo acoustic guitar, has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. Or at least they would if he was the kind of artist who was ever satisfied. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a Certified Guitar Player by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. All the while, Tommy has hungered for what’s next. Tommy’s musical diversity, the range of expression that stretches from authentic country-blues to face-melting rock shredding, by way of tender and devastating pure song playing is testament that he can cover it all with a technique all uniquely his own.

NW Women Rhythm & Blues Christmas Concerts

Sonny Hess and the NW Women Rhythm & Blues return for the twentieth year of Christmas performances aimed at assisting The Candlelighters with efforts to help children with cancer. As a cancer survivor herself, this has always been something close to her heart and she annually gathers some of her most talented friends to join her for a pair of shows. This year’s concerts will feature alongside Sonny, Lisa Mann, Rae Gordon, Lady True Blue, Ellen Whyte, Kathryn Grimm, Arietta Ward, Jonnie Goodmanson, Kimberly Hall, Laura Conrad, Myrtle Brown and Kelly Pierce.

Rose City Blues Offers Three Days of Dancing & Blues History

Rose City Blues is Portland’s annual weekend of Blues music and dance, hosted by the Portland Blues & Jazz Dance Society. With over 20 hours of music and two days of workshops, Rose City Blues is the perfect place to spend the day learning about the history of blues and the vibrant blues culture we have today, and then to dance the nights away.

Featured performers this year include Norman Sylvester, LaRhonda Steele, Mary Flower, Dan Nash, Tevis Hodge Jr, and the Zapata Brothers. Instruction showcases will be led by Brenda Russell, Catherine Palmier, Carlton Jackson, Damon Stone, Kelsy Stone and Reggie Houston.

Sean Rowe – Raw and Powerful Blues-Folk from Upstate New York Songwriter

Singer and songwriter Sean Rowe’s rather astonishing singing voice evokes the sound of the ages. His big rumbling baritone bears traces of John Lee Hooker, Greg Brown, Wilson Pickett, and others, though it is utterly unaffected. Rowe hails from Troy, New York. In his teens he discovered the blues of Muddy Waters and Hooker as well as the soul music of Marvin Gaye and Ray Charles. He began playing guitar and learning songs by virtually every artist he admired — and then some. By the time he began playing the local bar scene at 18, he had amassed enough original and cover material to perform four one-hour sets per night. Appropriate to his love of folk-blues legends like Howlin’ Wolf, he ventured to Sam Phillips Recording studio in Memphis to work on his latest recording, New Lore). Tapping into the history of the legendary space to hone a sound that is at once rich and stark, putting Rowe’s deep and dynamic rage at the forefront. Because if high notes can shatter windows, Rowe’s low and guttural ones can meld sand into glass.

Canadian Blues Legend Harpdog Brown & The Uptown Blues Band Return to Town

Canada’s Classic Bluesman, Harpdog Brown is on the road again and he’s bringing his hot new band The Uptown Blues Band back to Music Monday’s! Harpdog Brown has grown a reputation as a real-deal purveyor of classic electric blues. Think of the old Chess Records and Sun Records of the late 40’s and early 50’s. These days he’s been touring more and more as Harpdog Brown & the Uptown Blues Band – a vintage New Orleans Blues sound featuring slide trombone, keyboards, bass and drums and often a sax and clarinet. Still a vintage vibe, just a different vintage! This music will move you! They perform mostly originals yet they often include great songs of the masters from that era. Think Louis Jordan, Satchmo, Sonny Boy Williamson, Wynonie Harris, even Duke Ellington. Audiences are raving about this new show!

Shakey Graves – The X9 World Tour Hits Oregon

Shakey Graves is an Americana musician from Austin, Texas whose music combines blues, folk, and rock and roll. Rose-Garcia received his stage name at Old Settler’s Music Festival in 2007 after he and his friends jokingly gave each other Indian guide names over a campfire. The self-described “gentleman from Texas” admits his musical moniker is a character he’s built, an image he’s projected out into the world. And his musical endeavors under the alias are, or at least should be, just as malleable as the image itself. He made a name for himself as a one-man show, playing the guitar while simultaneously using his heels to play a kick drum embedded in an old suitcase. Though Shakey Graves has evolved since his days as Austin’s resident “hobo-folk” one-man act, fans will recognize Rose-Garcia’s masterful guitar work and mesmerizing vocals. He’s been called “unclassifiably original. And frighteningly good” by NPR
