Too Slim - Too Slim & The Taildraggers Return To Billy Blues

Too Slim - Too Slim & The TaildraggersNew York writer Dave Rubin wrote that, “[i]f Tim “Too Slim” Langford only played slide guitar, he would slither around most other blues guitarists and take a ferocious bite out of their pride. But as the sole six-string slinger, songwriter and lead vocalist of the power trio Too Slim and the Taildraggers, Langford is a force of nature leaving musical tracks others try to follow”.

Creating an eclectic style of blues and rock that has become a genre all its own, Tim “Too Slim” Langford’s ever-evolving musical direction cannot easily be classified. Too Slim and the Taildraggers effortlessly cross genres, flavoring Blues with Rock and Americana, they appeal to audiences of varying musical tastes.

Tim Langford has won multiple individual awards for Best Guitarist, Best Slide Guitarist, and Best Songwriter and the band are in the Hall of Fame in three Northwest blues societies including the Cascade Blues Association. The band’s 2013 release “Blue Heart” reached as high as #3 on the BillBoard Top Blues Album Chart and Shiver, the bands previous release was a 2012 Blues Music Award nominee for “Blues Rock Recording of the Year”.

Too Slim and the Taildraggers current rhythm section consists of Nashville bassist Eric “Stretch” Hanson and drummer Jeff “Shakey” Fowlkes (Kid Rock, Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise).

Harpdog Brown and The Uptown Blues Band

Harpdog BrownWith a briefcase filled with awards, including three Maple Blues Awards naming him the best harmonica player in Canada, Vancouver’s Harpdog Brown has been called a blues evangelist — and that’s a very fitting moniker.  “I speak the blues like it’s the truth, and it is” he was recently quoted.  “I do feel like I’m a servant of the people.  And I do heal people if they pay attention to the good messages in the songs I choose.”  He delivers those messages in the traditional sound of early electric blues.  Think of the old Chess Records and Sun Records of the late 40’s and early 50’s.  Harpdog tells us that “blues has a healing power.  It’s a beautiful celebration of our perfectly flawed lives.  We help people forget about their issues of the moment and then they realize that we all have our issues, and that’s ok.”

Andy Grigg from Blues Revue magazine wrote that “[i]sn’t it nice to know that all the “fast food / flavor of the week” blues artists are easily dispensed with when compared with the REAL THING. I mean the bona fide, totally authentic purveyor of heart and soul, down-in-the-alley blues. And, believe you me, Harpdog Brown is a  purveyor with pedigree.”

Called the best blues band in Canada, which is no overstatement, Harpdog Brown & The Travelin’ Blues Show will be bringing their classic blues to The Birk on Saturday, September 2, with a band featuring Jordie Edmonds on guitar, bassist Pat Darcus and Seattle-based drummer Jeff “Drummerboy” Hayes. The Birk is located at 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld. Show time is 7:00 pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance through Tickettomato.com for $10.00 or at the door for $15.00 day of show.

Seth Walker, Seth Walker Band

Seth Walker, Seth Walker Band“[Seth Walker] is pure talent, a masterful blues guitarist, a singer with some swing in his voice and a writer whose (songs) sound less composed than unleashed.” – Austin American-Statesman.

Over the past 10 years, Seth Walker has become one of the most revered modern roots artists in the United States — a three-dimensional talent combining a gift for melody and lyric, a rich, Gospel-drenched, Southern-inflected voice, and a true blue knack for getting around on the guitar. His latest studio album, Gotta Get Back, is yet another masterwork that further enhances  this reputation.

Growing up on a commune in rural North Carolina as the son of classically trained musicians, Seth Walker played cello long before discovering the six-string in his 20s. When his introduction to the blues, his fate was forever sealed. Instantaneously, Seth was looking to artists like T-Bone Walker, Snooks Eaglin, and B.B. King as wellsprings of endless inspiration. The rest is history.

Perhaps Country Standard Time put it best: “If you subscribe to the Big Tent theory of Americana, then Seth Walker –with his blend of blues, gospel, pop, R&B, rock, and a dash country—just might be your poster boy.”

The Seth Walker Band will be performing at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld, Friday, September 1, taking the stage at 7:30 pm. Advance tickets can be found at Tickettomato.com for $10.00 advance, with admission at the door going for $15.00.

The Paladins

The PaladinsThe Paladins from San Diego, California are the preeminent blues/rockabilly band in America. Founded in the early 1980s by guitarist Dave Gonzalez and his high school friend and double bass player Thomas Yearsley, they have recorded five singles, nine full-length studio records, and three live albums. They helped pave the way for the rockabilly craze of the early 1980s, with their tagline at the time “Western & Bop”, as they played a combination of rockabilly and vintage country together with a blues groove. Along the way they built a solid reputation as one of America’s hardest-working and best live bands.

Thirty-seven years later and The Paladins are still at the top of their game with dynamic performances that draw huge crowds. The band will be heading to Oregon for a pair of shows not to be missed.

On Thursday, September 28, The Paladins will be heading to Portland for a show at Dante’s, 350 W Burnside. Show time is 9:00 pm, contact the venue (866) 777-8932 or check their website Danteslive.com for admission prices. Tickets to be available at Ticketweb.com.

Jimmy Thackery and the Drivers

Jimmy Thackery and the DriversThe Boston Globe describes Jimmy Thackery as “a four hour performer. That’s not how long he plays, but how long one should travel to see him. He is a phenomenal guitarist, one of the best we’ve seen.”

Well, you won’t have to travel four hours to see Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers as they will be appearing in two shows within an hour or so of Portland. This is a trip well worth taking to catch one of the finest blues bands in the world.

Whether Jimmy Thackery headlines a festival or jams for hours in one of numerous blues bars that dot the musical landscape, he’ll always unleash an intense volley of rockin’ blues guitar guaranteed to leave crowds emotionally spent. His double edged guitar dynamics allow him to fire off tracer missiles, bend a note so it will fit under a limbo bar, run off dive bomber riffs, and find space within the trembling of one stinging note.

On Thursday, August 3, Jimmy Thackery & The Drivers will be appearing at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202, in Birkenfeld. Tickets for this 7:30 pm show are available in advance at TicketTomato.com for $10.00, or $15.00 at the door day of show.

Tom and Barb’s Zydeco Ranch, 1551 Wind Mountain Road, Home Valley, WA. will host this event, and show time is 3:15 pm. Tickets for this family friendly bash are $25.00 available at Eventbrite.com. Skamania Lodge, along with a variety of vendors, will provide food and drinks for sale and no outside food or drinks are allowed.

Anni Piper

Anni Piper“Piper has the kind of voice that lulls men to their doom. It’s soft and sweet when it wants to be, scared and vulnerable a moment later, then ripping through you like a razor… Piper commands songs utterly.” – Jeremy Loome, The Edmondton Sun

One listen will tell you why in her homeland Anni Piper is known as the First Lady of Blues. Not only is she a sultry vocalist, but an insightful composer, accomplished bass player, and show stopping performer. Born and raised in Australia, her passion for blues was ignited by the sound of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Picking up a bass guitar at age 14, Piper completed a Bachelor of Contemporary Music degree at 19 years of age. Finding it difficult to resume her performing career following the birth of her son, Piper recorded her debut album ‘Jailbait’ in 2004. She was immediately signed to Black Market Music, Australia’s most prestigious blues label and began touring throughout the country. She has since been honored with multiple nominations and awards from the Australian Blues Music Awards, ABC Radio “Fresh Air” contest, and songwriting contests in both Australia and the UK. Piper has since recorded with the American label Blue Leaf Records and most recently released her newest album, More Guitars Than Friends, on her own Sugar Daddy Records label. Now living in the US, she has toured 35 states, playing in major venues such as The House of Blues and BB King’s.

Anni Piper will be heading to Oregon in mid-August, with her first ever appearance at The Birk on Friday, August 11. Show time is at 6:00 pm with tickets available in advance at TicketTomato.com for $10.00. Admission at the door is $15.00. The Birk is located at 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld.

On Saturday, August 12, Anni Piper will be performing at the Bronze Blues & Brews Festival in Joseph, Oregon.

Ian Moore

Ian MooreSince his arrival as a solo artist in 1993 and his self-titled debut on Capricorn Records, Texas music star Ian Moore’s journey has been one of perpetual forward motion and constant change. That record included the hits, “Satisfied,” “Blue Sky,” and even featured the track, “Harlem,” which rap icon Ice Cube made in to a music video. Now twenty-four years later and a series of recordings under various labels, Moore has released his fourteenth album, Strange Days. Birthed from channeling the influences from his childhood, soul music and the blues, while carrying forward all the hard-earned life lessons acquired on his journey that allow him to infuse these songs with a depth that only comes from many years and miles. Moore’s ability to straddle genres like a Neil Young or a Jack White is obvious. By paying tribute to such luminaries as Curtis Mayfield, Otis Redding, Aaron Neville (even covering “Hercules”), and Sly Stone, IanMoore can offer music politically charged at times, as well as the heartfelt love song filled with emotion and purpose.

Ian Moore will be touring Oregon for a trio of dates with his full band in early August.

On Tuesday, August 8, the band will be performing at Springville Cellars Winery in Hood River. Located at 13 Railroad Avenue, show time is at 8:00 pm. Contact the venue for admission information at 541-308-0700.

Wednesday, August 9 will find the band in the eastern part of the state, playing at the Roy Raley Ice Rink in Pendleton for their Wednesday in the Park concert series. The location is 1205 SW Court Street, beginning at 7:00 pm. Free.

The Ian Moore Band will be coming to Portland on Thursday, August 10 for a 9:00 pm show at Mississippi Studios, 3939 N Mississippi Avenue. Tickets for this 21 & over concert are $16.50 advance through Ticketfly.com, or $20.00 day of show.

The Claudettes

The ClaudettesThe Claudettes fuse Windy City piano blues with the full-throttle energy of rockabilly and punk, jazz-age echoes of burlesque and vaudeville, and the sultriness of ’60s pop-soul to write a thrilling new chapter in American roots music. Group founder Johnny Iguana mashes the piano alongside singer Berit Ulseth, bassist/singer Zach Verdoorn, and drummer Matt Torre. Johnny, who has toured and recorded with blues legends Otis Rush, Junior Wells, Buddy Guy, and James Cotton is also a member of two Grammy-nominated groups: Chicago Blues–A Living History and the Muddy Waters 100 Band.

When The Claudettes perform, they roam through a wide range of dynamics, often following a stomping rocker with a ballad offering the mellowest of mellow tones. They’ve created their own fanatical fusion of blues and soul-jazz, like Ray Charles on a punk kick. Imagine an amped-up piano hybrid of Otis Spann, Ray Charles, and Mose Allison, joined by a jolly madman drummer and conducted in gonzo fashion by Raymond Scott. There’s plenty of Chicago-style piano pounding, but it’s also an adventure in melting-pot music, with punk/rockabilly energy as well as lush soulful vocals. It’s definitely a performance to be witnessed and one that you’ll soon not forget.

You have the chance to catch The Claudettes as they wind their tour through Portland on Wednesday, August 9 at Catfish Lou’s, 2460 NW 24th Avenue. Show time for this 21 & over performance is 9:00 pm, with a $8.00 admission at the door, with tickets available in advance only $5.00 through TicketTomato.com.

Texas-born Hamilton Loomis is the son of musician parents who listened to blues, rock, and soul. Music ran in his veins and with instruments readily available around the house he picked up the skills on multiple instruments while performing regularly as part of his family’s doo-wop group. While still a teenager, Loomis met the legendary Bo Diddley, and the two became close friends. He learned how to entertain and take command of a stage through Diddley and has always followed the advice given him by the elder bluesman to “innovate, don’t imitate.” Loomis is at his best while onstage. He performances are energetic and infectious. Don’t be surprised to find him walking into the crowd at any given moment bringing an interactive feel to his audiences. His latest release, Give It Back, is appropriately named because that is exactly what he gives to his audiences!

Hamilton Loomis will be appearing for one show in Oregon only on Friday, August 11 at The Birk, 11139 Hwy 202 in Birkenfeld. Tickets for this 7:30 pm show are available at TicketTomato.com for $15.00 advance, or at the door for $18.00 day of show.
