The Black Keys - Let’s Rock Tour

The Black Keys - Let’s Rock Tour

The Black Keys formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001, consisting of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). Beginning as an independent act, the group forged a raw, blues rock sound for itself with its self-produced, early albums, which were recorded in basements. That sound draws heavily from Auerbach’s blues influences, including Junior Kimbrough, Howlin’ Wolf, and Robert Johnson. The duo eventually emerged as one of the most popular garage rock artists during a second wave of the genre’s revival in the 2010s. The “Let’s Rock” tour features the group’s first new music since 2014, hitting major venues across the country.

Smooth Hound Smith Returns To The White Eagle

Smooth Hound Smith Returns To The White EagleSmooth Hound Smith is a foot-stompin’, American roots and rock band founded by Zack Smith and Caitlin Doyle-Smith. Established in 2012 and based in East Nashville, TN, they record and perform a varied and unique style of folksy, garage-infused rhythm & blues. Using primal-foot percussion, complex and fuzzed-out, finger-picked guitar patterns, warbled harmonicas, tasty harmonies, and syncopated tambourine, they are able to create something rugged and visceral: a modern interpretation of early blues, soul and rock & roll music that harkens back to the traditions of hazy front porch folk songs as well as raucous back-alley juke joints.

Shawn James at Dante’s

Shawn James at Dante’sShawn James’ voice is a force of nature, a musical preacher to a flock that accepts everyone, a combination of the gospel choirs he sang with as a youngster and his training in classical music and opera. Born and raised on Chicago’s South Side, James’ timeless sound is steeped in blues legends like Robert Johnson and Son House, forever living at the crossroads of damnation and redemption, the two inextricably woven into the fabric of his songs. His blend of blues, folk and soul contrasts dark and light, anger and joy, gritty and authentic. Transcending any and all genres, James’ songs speak as much to these tremulous times as they do the eternal human condition.

Taj Mahal In Eugene

Taj Mahal In EugeneTaj Mahal doesn’t wait for permission. If a sound intrigues him, he sets out to make it. If origins mystify him, he resolves to trace them. If rules get in his way, he unapologetically breaks them. To Taj, convention means nothing — but traditions are holy. He has pushed music and culture forward, all while lovingly looking back.

If anyone knows where to find the blues, it’s Taj. A brilliant artist with a musicologist’s mind, he has pursued and elevated the roots of beloved sounds with boundless devotion and skill. Then, as he traced origins to the American South, the Caribbean, Africa, and elsewhere, he created entirely new sounds, over and over again. As a result, he’s not only a god to rock-and-roll icons such as Eric Clapton and the Rolling Stones, but also a hero to ambitious artists toiling in obscurity who are determined to combine sounds that have heretofore been ostracized from one another. No one is as simultaneously traditional and avant-garde.

Jaqua Concert Hall, The Shedd Institute, 285 E Broadway, Eugene. Tuesday, November 19, 9:00 pm. $49.00 – $79.00 at tickets.theshedd.org.
