Harmonica Blowdown
Harmonica Blowdown

Harmonica ace Kim Field has pulled together a harmonica blowdown to end all harmonica blowdowns. He convinced two of the top blues harp masters on the planet–Mitch Kashmar and Hank Shreve–to take part, throwing himself in there in the bargain. Players of this caliber deserve to be backed up by only the best, and he didn’t have to look any further than his own world-class band, The Perfect Gentlemen, who recently won the CBA’s Muddy Award for Best New Blues Act. If you’re a fan of blues harp, this is a truly sick lineup of talent. If you’re a fan of world-class music, this is a truly sick lineup of talent. And, most of all, this will be a very FUN show! Treat yourself and reserve your ticket now for what will surely be one of the most memorable shows in 2020: the Harmonica Blowdown.

Eric McFadden

Guitar Player Magazine writes, “If San Francisco is home to anyone approaching the abilities of a modern Jimi Hendrix, it’s Eric McFadden.”
In Review describes McFadden as: “Encompassing three decades of recording and performing live, McFadden has created his own original style. His music is dirty, his guitar is dirty, and his attitude is dirty. Not in a “screw you” way but in the gut-wrenching, no-holds-barred, breaking-all-the-rules way. Who can say what Blues really is when the music and lyrics gush out like a river of pain from one’s personal experiences? The Blues comes in many shapes and sizes. We often try to put our finger on it but it easily slips into another form keeping the music relevant and forever alive. While delivering the goods with the same energy as the Clash and the Ramones, Eric McFadden’s Blues seek its own musical footprint on (his new album) Pain By Numbers.”

Dante’s, 350 W Burnside St. Friday, January 24. 9:00 pm. $12.00 Ticketweb.com. 21 & over. (Eric McFadden will return to Dante’s on Wednesday, January 29 to open for New York-based artist Kate Vargas)

The King Louie Organ Trio
The King Louie Organ Trio

The Lake Theater was proud to host this all-star Portland trio’s debut CD release, “It’s About Time,” last April.  Since then, that recording has received rave reviews world-wide, including in top jazz magazines in the U.S. (Downbeat) and the UK (Jazz Journal)!  This summer and fall, the guys tore it up at the Waterfront Blues Festival, the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, and The Astoria Jazz Festival.  Then in November, Louis Pain and Renato Caranto (using local drummers) played a series of seven gigs in Hawaii, highlighted by a performance at the East Hawaii Blues & Jazz Festival.  That island mini-tour was such a success that the guys have already been invited back in March!

Indeed, “it’s about time” that Louis Pain, Renato Caranto, and Edwin Coleman III stepped out on their own after decades of helping other artists—including Esperanza Spalding, Mel Brown, Andy Stokes, Lloyd Jones, Soul Vaccination and LaRhonda Steele, along with the late great Merle Haggard, Paul deLay, and Linda  Hornbuckle—tell their musical stories.  Come out and celebrate the fresh, spontaneous, soulful sounds of this amazing trio!

Lake Theater & Café, 106 N State St., Lake Oswego. Monday, January 13, 7:00 pm. $15.00 general admission, $80.00 VIP tables (seating four, closest to the stage, at Laketheatercafe.com. All ages.

Eric Johnson

Eric Johnson Austin’s Eric Johnson has been traveling on a prolific odyssey over the course of more than four decades. Along the way, his creations have encompassed repertoire that cross pollinate genres which include rock, blues, jazz, fusion, soul, folk, new-age, classical and even country. Inevitably E.J. says it best himself in sharing. “It really boils down to the music and the song at the end of the day,” he explains. “If it doesn’t have that it gets boring for me. The most important thing for me is to grow musically and make a more expansive and meaningful artistic statement with every new project.”  His 202 tour will be titles Classics: Past & Present, focusing on his latest recording alongside a repertoire from his prolific career.

Cedric Burnside

The 39-year-old still lives on several acres not far from the Holly Springs, Mississippi, home where he was raised by “Big Daddy,” his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside whom Cedric famously played with, just as his own father, drummer Calvin Jackson, did. Cedric was literally born to the blues, more specifically, the “rhythmically unorthodox” Hill country variant which emerged from Mississippi, where he grew up surrounded (and influenced) by Junior Kimbrough, Jessie May Hemphill and Otha Turner, as well as delta musicians T-Model Ford and Paul “Wine” Jones.

Grammy-nominated in 2015 for Best Blues Album for the Cedric Burnside Project’s Descendants of Hill Country, as well as the recipient of the Blues Music Awards honor as Drummer of the Year for four consecutive years, Cedric’s latest album offers a showcase for his electric and acoustic guitar.
