Terry Evans

Terry EvansGrowing up in the Delta, blues vocalist Terry Evans began singing as part of the church choir, where he jokes that he wasn’t allowed to sing the “rough stuff” like rock & roll. He was only permitted to sing gospel and would have to slip away to sing secular songs. While listening to people like Elmore James, Little Walter, Albert King, and BB King he decided that he wanted to be a soul singer.

In the sixties, Terry worked with an a cappella group called The Knights, touring throughout the South in clubs and juke joints. From there Terry was lured to the west coast where he first picked up the guitar, started writing music and soon became a prolific songwriter. Pops Staples, as well as the late, great Louis Jordan (among others) have recorded his songs. He worked for years as one of the most sought-after session artists, working with the likes of John Fogarty, Ry Cooder, Joan Armatrading, John Lee Hooker, Boz Scaggs, and others. Along with fellow vocalist Bobby King, Evans toured with Ry Cooder throughout the US, Europe and Japan. Since then he has recorded two albums with King and eight under his name.

Terry Evans is a terrific live performer and he will be heading back to the Portland area for one night at The Cascade Bar & Grill, 15000 SE Mill Plain in Vancouver, WA. This June 8 show will start at 8:00 pm with a $7.00 cover at the door. Joining Evans will be local blues greats Jesse Samsel, Ken Scandlyn and Mark Shark on guitars, with the rhythm section of Cary Samsel and Nate Powell laying down the fatback.

Do yourself a favor and see why Ry Cooder has considered him to be one of the best front men around. To see him perform is to understand why. Terry is one of the most dynamic soul and blues singers performing today.

Acoustic Guitar Summit Christmas

Acoustic Guitar SummitThe Acoustic Guitar Summit is made up of three of the country’s best fingerstyle guitarists, all of whom call Portland home. Two members, Doug Smith and Mark Hanson, won a Grammy in 2005 for their contributions to the Henry Mancini – Pink Guitar CD. The third member, Terry Robb, has been the perennial winner of the Cascade Blues Association’s award as the top acoustic blues guitarist, and recently was inducted into the Oregon Music Hall of Fame. Their music  is heard on national television (Martha Stewart Living, American Idol), major films (Twister, Moll Flanders) and National Public Radio (Echoes and West Coast Live). In addtion, their music is regularly licensed for syndicated TV and radio broadcasts, as well as regional and national advertising campaigns.

Together the Acoustic Guitar Summit performs a wide range of music. A blistering original may lead into a tightly interwoven arrangement of a classic ballad. A gypsy jazz tune like Django Reinhardt’s “Nuages” may lead into their stunning version of the folk classic “The Water Is Wide.” Their original tunes range from intricately woven fingerpicking burners to slide-inflected blues and jazz ballads. There are always hot licks and great fun at an AGS concert!

The trio get together a couple times a year to perform in their hometown and it is always a showcase that is mesmerizing and is not to be missed. The Acoustic Guitar Summit will be returning for an engagement at The Lake Theater & Café, 106 N State Street in Lake Oswego on Monday, June 12 at 7:00 pm. Tickets are available at the venue’s website Laketheatercafe.com  for $20.00 general admission, or $100.00 for a VIP table seating four and closest to the stage.

Adrian Martin plays a searing hybrid guitar style that bridges blues bawling, jazz sophistication and classical technique. He’s performed around the world and repeatedly produces sold out shows. Adrian and LaRhonda co-lead this amazing sextet through a historical musical journey into the soul of the 60’s civil rights movement, personified by the legendary Nina Simone.

Those who have seen Schofield in the handful of appearances he has made in the Portland area know that these accolades do not come without reason. Roy Bookbinder

Roy BookbinderIt is not often that Oregon gets to see acoustic blues master Roy Bookbinder heading through our region, so it is important that we let you know when such an event occurs. Even if it means taking a little drive to see him perform.

Roy Bookbinder has the goods: the original, the bare-knuckle, the low-down . . . blues. Who can say they were friends with the Rev. Gary Davis, Pink Anderson and Robert Lockwood Jr? And toured with Arthur Big Boy Crudup, Hot Tuna, JJ Cale, and Bonnie Raitt ?  Roy can. He has the stories, the licks, and the mystery of timeless music in his fingers. He’s been featured on a PBS special and interviewed by Terry Gross on “Fresh Air.”  He’s also a regular at Fur Peace Ranch, where he teaches along with Jorma Kaukonen. When he brings his  ‘Tour Bus’  to town, a one-man blues-fest ensues. He plays and he entertains, feeding us music and stories, and the evening is a celebration for us all. We’re privileged to have Roy here to preserve and extend the tradition of great American blues music.

Roy Bookbinder will be making two appearances in Oregon in June. On Thursday, June 22, he will be playing an in-store show at Tsunami Books, 2585 Willamette Street in Eugene. Contact the bookstore for ticket information and time at 541-345-8986.

On Friday, June 23, Bookbinder will be doing a house concert that is open to the public in Cannon Beach at The Cape Concert Series hosted by Maggie & Henry at Sandpiper Square, 172 N Hemlock. Tickets for this are available by calling 503-436-1718. Performance time is 7:00 pm.

(Please note that a Portland area performance is being attempted to be scheduled at this time, watch the CBA Facebook page for any potential show update)

No matter where he’s currently residing or where he is traveling, Monti Amundson will forever be a Portland blues icon. After moving to Nashville a few months back and just finishing with a European tour that took him through The Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium with multiple dates, Monti will be coming back home for a short visit and of course he is going to be bringing his guitar. Known for his fiery performances and guitar solos, the man sings larger than life. When Monti gets compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan or Johnny Winter he just says “thank you.” The fact is, the big man has his own style. “I’m a blues guitar player in a band that plays rock n’ roll,” Monti explains. He doesn’t so much as straddle the line between the genres as bend it, ignore it, or race back and forth across it until both sides go up in flames. The blues of Big Monti comes straight from the heart, cuts through your soul, and is as real as it gets. Monti has several dates lined up for his trek back to Oregon, and it will all start on Thursday, June 22 when he is joined by Allen Hunter at the Downtown Dog, 780 S Main Street, in Lebanon, OR. Show time for the Big Monti Duo will be 6:00 pm. On Friday, June 23, Monti will be returning to one of his favorite venues, The Trails End Saloon where he once held court every Wednesday night hosting a jam. This appearance will feature the Big Monti Trio with Allen Hunter on bass and Cory Burden on drums. Show time is 8:30 pm. The Trails End is located at 1325 Main Street, in Oregon City. The following Tuesday, June 27, Monti will be a guest at AC Porter’s regular gig at The Blue Diamond, 2016 NE Sandy Blvd, in Portland, beginning at 8:30 pm. Then on Thursday, June 29, the Big Monti Trio will be heading across the river to Vancouver, WA for a performance at Billy’s Blues Bar, 7115 NE Hazel Dell Avenue at 8:00 pm.. Friday, June 30 will find the Big Monti Trio at The Half Penny in Salem with special guest Robbie Laws. Located at 3742 Commercial Street SE, the show will start at 9:00 pm.
