Paul Oscher -Cool Cat

Cool Cat
Blues Fidelity Recordings

Paul Oscher -Cool CatOkay, anybody familiar with the blues is already aware of harmonica ace Paul Oscher’s past as member of the Muddy Waters band. But it has been over thirty years since Muddy left this world and Oscher’s tenure with the band had come to a close more than a decade before. He certainly has done anything but sit on his hands since then. Tough he may not release new recordings very often, when he does it is something to celebrate. They’re always traditional blues masterpieces displaying his knack for not only the harmonica, but showcasing his adeptness on guitar, piano and songwriting, too.

Cool Cat is his first album since 2010’s Bet On The Blues. It also features a good number of friends that he has made since moving to Austin, including Mike Schermer, Mike Keller, Sarah Brown and Lavelle White, Johnny Ace and Russell Lee. Most of the numbers were recorded in Austin, with the closer done in the Bay Area at Greaseland Studios with the likes of Kid Andersen and June Core at hand.

The album is a nice display of all the talents that Oscher possesses, not just as a musician, but as a first-rate story-teller as he narrates the title piece about a homeless man and his cat on a leash wearing a beret known as “Cool Cat.”. The song is done is two stylings, the first as jazzy instrumental and then again in an R&B manner. He shows his flair for all musical approaches. There’s a New Orleans second line piano opening the disc on “Money Makin’ Woman. He also offers poetry with “Mississippi Poem” about the atmosphere and landscape that birthed the blues. He also pays tribute with a cover of Muddy’s “Rollin’ And Tumblin’.”

Two numbers that stand out are “Ain’t That A Man (Dedicated To Mr. Cotton)” where he tells the story of James Cotton and how he came up from the fields to become the blues giant he was; and the other is “Dirty Dealin’ Mama” a humorous piece with Miss Lavelle White playing the part of a not so faithful partner who seems to be spending time with just about everybody behind his back.

Cool Cat is jam packed full of fun and blues. One of the year’s very best. There’s not a number here that you don’t want to listen, it’s an every moment must hear. This is one of those albums that cannot be recommended enough. Cool Cat is cool stuff!

The California Honeydrops

TThe California Honeydropshe California Honeydrops have a reputation as being among the most exciting and dynamic live bands on the planet. With unrelenting energy and a near-encyclopedic knowledge of musical styles, genres and idioms, the Honeydrops have spent a decade playing everywhere from subway stations in their native Oakland, California to sold-out shows in theatres and at festivals all across the globe.

The band has come a long way since vocalist, guitarist, and trumpeter Lech Wierzynkski and drummer Ben Malament started busking in an Oakland subway station. With the additions of Johnny Bones on tenor sax and clarinet, Lorenzo Loera on keyboards and Beau Bradbury on bass, they’ve built a powerful full-band sound drawing on diverse musical influences from Bay Area R&B to funk, Southern soul, Delta blues and New Orleans second-line.  A new addition to the band, Portland’s own Leon Cotter, who brings a soulful clarinet/flute/horn addition which adds another layer of beauty. All while staying true to the organic, street-level feel of their origins. More like parties than traditional concerts, their shows feature extensive off-stage jamming and crowd interaction.

Tommy Emmanuel

Tommy EmmanuelTommy Emmanuel, widely acknowledged as the international master of the solo acoustic guitar, has achieved enough musical milestones to satisfy several lifetimes. Or at least they would if he was the kind of artist who was ever satisfied. At the age of six, he was touring regional Australia with his family band. By 30, he was a rock n’ roll lead guitarist burning up stadiums in Europe. At 44, he became one of five people ever named a Certified Guitar Player by his idol, music icon Chet Atkins. Today, he plays hundreds of sold-out shows every year from Nashville to Sydney to London. All the while, Tommy has hungered for what’s next. Tommy’s musical diversity, the range of expression that stretches from authentic country-blues to face-melting rock shredding, by way of tender and devastating pure song playing is testament that he can cover it all with a technique all uniquely his own.

Aladdin Theater, 3017 SE Milwaukie Ave., Thursday, December 6th, 8:00 pm. Tickets $39.50 advance at Ticketfly.com, $45.00 at the door. All ages.

Sean Rowe - Raw and Powerful Blues-Folk

Sean Rowe - Raw and Powerful Blues-FolkSinger and songwriter Sean Rowe’s rather astonishing singing voice evokes the sound of the ages. His big rumbling baritone bears traces of John Lee Hooker, Greg Brown, Wilson Pickett, and others, though it is utterly unaffected. Rowe hails from Troy, New York. In his teens he discovered the blues of Muddy Waters and Hooker as well as the soul music of Marvin Gaye and Ray Charles. He began playing guitar and learning songs by virtually every artist he admired — and then some. By the time he began playing the local bar scene at 18, he had amassed enough original and cover material to perform four one-hour sets per night. Appropriate to his love of folk-blues legends like Howlin’ Wolf, he ventured to Sam Phillips Recording studio in Memphis to work on his latest recording, New Lore). Tapping into the history of the legendary space to hone a sound that is at once rich and stark, putting Rowe’s deep and dynamic rage at the forefront. Because if high notes can shatter windows, Rowe’s low and guttural ones can meld sand into glass.
